Present Laughter by Noel Coward

Directed and produced by Celia de Wolff

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01rtc8p

first broadcast - BBC Radio 4, Saturday Drama, 6 April 2013
rebroadcast - BBC Radio 4, Saturday 31 January 2015

A brand new production of Noel Coward's brilliant, sparkling, and timeless comedy! Noel Coward's 'Present Laughter' follows a few days in the life of successful and self-obsessed actor Garry Essendine as he prepares to go on tour to Africa. (Coward described the play as ‘a series of semi-autobiographical pyrotechnics' - and there are definitely fireworks abounding in Gary Essendine's life!) Amid a series of events bordering on farce, Garry must deal with interruptions including the numerous women who want to seduce him (most notably a young ingénue, Daphne, and Joanna, the wife of his manager, Henry). Joanna is already having an affair with his producer, Morris, but is ready to move in on fresh kill, Garry himself. Thankfully, he has Monica to help keep his life in order. She's his long-suffering and extremely witty secretary, and she's a dab hand at keeping other women at bay. And, of course, there's Garry's estranged wife Liz Essendine - currently collaborating with Garry on a new venture, and doesn't that spell disaster? Garry's mad life includes being confronted by the obsessed young playwright Roland Maule, a valet and housekeeper who could be a comedy duo in their own right, and the unbearable inevitability of all that comes with turning forty.

Weekend Listening - Aaron Hicklin

A BBC radio adaptation of Noel Coward's crisp, witty 1939 three-act farce, Present Laugher, is a perfect way to spend 90 minutes this weekend.

"Writing in his diary in 1970 about Noel Coward's war time farce, Present Laughter, the acclaimed theater director, Peter Hall, said, 'What a wonderful play it would be if, as Coward must have wanted, all those love affairs were about homosexuals.' No-one has yet staged the play with men in the female roles, but someone should. In his own time, of course, Coward could not, although today's audiences would find the gay subtext rather obvious. As it happens there is a gay character in Present Lives—a young playwright, Roland Maule, who is obsessed by the central character, Garry Essendine, an egotistical middle-age actor who served as a lightly-disguised stand-in for Coward himself. Essendine spends most of the play fending off a string of women, as well as Maule, in a game of increasingly-complicated subterfuge. The character of Maule might have seemed bold in 1939, but the way in which he is dismissed by those around him as mad leaves a slightly bad taste today. Coward himself eventually left England, a country he described as 'full of intolerance and bigotry,' and died in Jamaica in 1973. Elaine Stritch once described him as "one of the saddest men I have ever known.” As with many sad people, Coward could be very funny in his work, and Present Laughter zips along like the grandchild of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. This radio production by BBC Radio 4, available online through tomorrow, stars Samuel West (better known from PBS's Mr Selfridge) as Essendine, and, in the role of Maule, the talented Freddie Fox..."

"Present Laughter is a comic play written by Noël Coward in 1939 and first staged in 1942...
The play's title comes from a song in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, which urges carpe diem
('present mirth hath present laughter')."
