Coast and Country Auctions S01 complete ((720p HD, soft Eng subs)

Series looking at the stories behind Britain's most exciting traditional markets and getting under the skin of auction houses that are at the heart of coastal and rural economies.

First broadcast: March 2018
Duration: 45 minutes per episode

1. Brixham 1.
The first episode heads to the world-famous Brixham fish auction, which has been going for over a hundred years but is now experiencing the biggest boom in its history, turning over up to a million pounds a week. For sellers like trawler captain Alan Scales there is much at stake. He needs to get good prices for his fish or he can't pay his crew. Buyers range from big traders like Sean Perkes, spending tens of thousands of pounds a day on fish that will be exported round the world, to local fishmongers like Tracey Beer, battling to keep her shop afloat in challenging times.
The programme explores how the Brixham trawler transformed the industry in the 1800s, allowing fisherman to go further and fish deeper than ever before

2. Builth Wells 1
The Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells, mid Wales, hosts the Welsh Cob Autumn Sale. In front of crowds of up to 3,000, the three-day event sees more than 400 horses go under the hammer. One of the UK's most popular horse breeds, Welsh cobs were once the national workhorses. Now they're in high demand for riding and showing, both in the UK and internationally. Buyers from Japan and Germany are regularly seen at the auction.
For seller Marilyn Beach and granddaughter Robyn, there's lots at stake. They have four horses to sell, and success will help ensure the future of the family stables that Robin hopes to run one day. Janet Alderton and daughter Jo need new horses for their riding school and know that if they can get what they need, they can change lives. Seller David Oliver's motivation is different. The family horse hobby has got out of hand, and they own 40! Selling some is essential to make the family farm more manageable.

3. Exeter 1
South west England is Britain's farming capital, producing more food than the whole of Scotland and twice as much as Wales. At its heart is Exeter Livestock Market, the biggest agricultural auction in the region. On a busy day they sell over 3,000 animals, from cattle to pigs, sheep to calves, in around four hours. It takes a whole team of auctioneers to do it. Turnover can be as much as £700,000 a day.
For Chris Creeper, selling four calves, there's a lot at stake. The young farmer, supported by wife Connie and three-year-old daughter Sophie, has only been farming a few years - margins are tight, and good prices at auction are vital. At the other end of the scale, buyer John Laramy, nearly 80, has been coming to this auction for 50 years. He still does most of the buying for the family sheep farm that he runs with his son and grandson. Pig seller Andrew Freemantle is under pressure too. He needs to sell his sows at auction today because he can't easily take them back to his farm.

4. Spalding 1
Spalding Plant and Vegetable Auction in Lincolnshire is the oldest market of its kind in the UK, having started in 1948. There are three sales a week, selling as many as 1,000 bags and boxes of veg and up to 16,000 plants, shrubs and trees in a day. It needs two auctioneers to do it. The auction is here for a reason - a quarter of all UK veg and plant production happens in the Lincolnshire region, and in some areas one in four people work in agriculture.
Local seller Carl Inkley grows over a million plants a year in his nursery, but there's lots at stake at the auction, as he needs good prices to pay the staff wages. Buyers John Cullen and Hugh Faulds recently moved to the area from London, seeking more space and the amazing rich soil for their new landscape gardening business. In contrast, veg seller David Dickinson has been coming to this auction for over four decades and relies on it for pretty much all his income.

5. Bala 1
Bala in Snowdonia, north Wales, is home to one of the UK's most important sheepdog auctions - the Bala Autumn Sale. Nearly 80 dogs are sold in a day, and good prices are expected. From prize champions to inexperienced pups with promise, the Bala sale draws in buyers from all over the UK and phone bidders from as far afield as Iceland and the USA. Terrible weather threatens to derail the day, but the auction soldiers on.
Top seller Doug Lambie has high hopes for brother-and-sister collies Cap and Kate. There's much at stake for 57-year-old Norman Green, selling Sam and Swift. The former shepherd was recently made redundant and is hoping that sheepdog breeding will offer him a new future. Buyer Michael Hogan needs a new sheepdog for his farm, as his old dog, Craig, is 13 and needs to retire. But will he find what he needs at a price he can afford?

6. Builth Wells 2
In beautiful mid Wales, the Royal Welsh Showground hosts a unique annual event: the Welsh Cob Autumn Sale. Four hundred horses go under the hammer over three days, with prices ranging from £100 to £10,000. There's no event like it anywhere else in the world.
Welsh cobs are among Britain's most popular horse breeds, with a passionate international following too. For seller Julie Evans, there's a lot at stake. She's one of the UK's top Welsh cob breeders, and a former winner at the prestigious Royal Welsh Show. So, many eyes will be on the four horses she's brought to sell. Buyer Alan Scales has a lot riding on the auction too. He's one of the biggest Welsh cob agents in Britain, buying hundreds of horses a year on behalf of his many international clients. He needs to purchase 30 or so Welsh cobs over the next three days to satisfy clients in France, Holland and Germany. Seller Rob Manchip has different priorities. After 40 years as a renowned Welsh cob breeder, he's approaching retirement age and wants to downsize. He has four horses to sell, and hopes to find excellent homes for them all.

7. Exeter 2
South west England is one of Britain's premier farming areas, and at its heart is Exeter Livestock Market - the biggest agricultural auction in the West Country. On a busy day, they can sell nearly 4,000 animals here - from cattle and pigs to sheep and calves - and turnover as much as £700,000.
For sheer scale, one animal outstrips them all - sheep. There are nearly 2,500 to sell today. In fact, the auction was taken over by new management five and a half years ago, and they have just celebrated selling one million sheep in that time. Seller Stuart Crang is bringing 80 sheep to market today. Sheep rearing is seasonal, and he has to make the most of his income in the next few months, so prices are vital. With the average sheep selling for around £60, every pound can make a real difference. Buyer Roger Heggadon has to take care he doesn't pay too much. With nearly 2,000 sheep on his farm, and another 100 to buy today, it's a volume business that needs a clear head at auction. In the pig auction next door, buyer Rodney Phillips needs volume too. With over 40 regular customers to supply across the West Country - from butchers to wholesalers - he needs to buy at least 100 pigs to meet all his orders and keep his customers happy.

8. Brixham 2
The sign outside reads 'The World Famous Brixham Fish Market'. It's been here for over a hundred years, and business has never been better. They're currently turning over around £30 million a year - more than any other English fish auction. Over 70% of the fish they sell goes abroad.
It's a tough life for auctioneers John Rogers and Todd Crombie, with 4.30am starts every week day. 'We don't get much kip', say the pair drily. For sellers like fisherman Matt Ould it can be a tough life too, with prices always unpredictable. He has just spent £100,000 on a new fishing boat and needs to make £400 a day to cover running costs and pay himself a decent wage. Buyers at the auction range from traders like Josh Perkes, spending thousands of pounds a day on fish that will go to his many high-end restaurant clients, to smaller local businesses like Jackson Ltd which has been in Matt Endacott's family for nearly 100 years. Matt has a fish and chip shop, a fishmongers and a smoke house - and needs to buy enough fish, at the right prices, to keep all three businesses going.

9. Bala 2
Snowdonia in north Wales - 800 square miles of spectacular mountains and coastline - is home to one of the UK's most important sheepdog auctions - the Bala Autumn sale.
Nearly 80 dogs are on sale today, to buyers from all over the UK and beyond. With 33 million sheep in Britain, good sheepdogs are always in demand, and can sell for as much as £10,000. But today, auctioneers Glyn Owens and Elfor Morris have to battle atrocious weather. Seller Emrys Jones is a veteran of the sale. With a 25-acre smallholding, training and selling sheepdogs is an important part of his business. He hopes to get well over £2,000 for each of his dogs - Jim and Ross - at auction. His son Osian is buying today. The 26-year-old engineer who recently returned home after travelling abroad, is helping his dad with the business and hoping to buy a young dog of his own at the auction, to train up and sell later. Seller Dewi Williams also needs to supplement the income from his small farm. He's been training sheepdog Jess for eight months, and he and son Goronwy have high hopes. But how will the terrible weather affect them all?

10. Spalding 2
Lincolnshire is the heartland of UK horticulture, growing a quarter of all Britain's veg and Spalding Plant and Vegetable Auction is the biggest market of its kind in the country. They run three sales every week, selling as many as 1,000 bags and boxes of veg, and up to 16,000 plants, shrubs and trees each day. For the region's many smaller growers, they are the perfect sales outlet.
Local farmer John Dix is selling nearly a tonne of potatoes today. He's a man who loves his product: 'south Lincolnshire maris pipers are the best potatoes in the world. That's a fact!'. But there's been a national potato glut recently, so prices could be a worry. Buyer James Dawson has a bustling fruit and veg stall in Scunthorpe Market, 70 miles away. The Spalding Auction is vital for him. He has to strike a careful balance between getting the stock he needs to keep the stall running, but paying low enough prices that he can make a profit and pay himself a wage. Among the 30 or so buyers at the plant sale is Charles Stubbs, a man with a local empire of ten garden centres to buy for. He needs 4,000 plants, trees and shrubs today to fill two vans and keep the empire supplied.
