Thirteenth Century England was a
time of conflict, with the English monarchy contending with rebellious barons, warring princes in Wales, a feisty
Scotland, and an invasion by a French prince. Castles became strongholds for one or another faction, often strengthened
or rebuilt to withstand sieges. The Medieval castle reached the apex of its construction, before gunpowder changed
everything.

Such is the premise for Christopher Gravett's excellent Osprey Fortress Series entry
"English Castles 1200-1300". In a concise but incredibly informative book, he recaps the English Civil War of
the period and the external wars, and ties the conflicts to the construction and modification of various castles. Dover
Castle gets extensive coverage as an example of a stronghold with concentric walls. Caerphilly Castle in Wales is also
closely examined for its ingenious water defenses. The author discusses both the defense of the period's castles
and how they were besieged. The introductory chronology is crucial for keeping track of all the players. The text is
very nicely supplemented by photographs, diagrams and illustrations. Recommended to those with an interest in the period
