Milstein's 1970s EMI recording of Goldmark's well-known Concerto in A Minor is paired here with something of a rarity: a
Vienna Philharmonic performance of the Rustic Wedding Symphony under the baton of the German conductor Robert Heger
(1886-1978). Opera enthusiasts will know Heger through the innumerable opera recordings he made during his long career
featuring many of the leading singers of his day. But Heger also made numerous recording ventures into the field of
symphonic music as well - and the Goldmark Rustic Wedding Symphony from c.1930 is almost certainly one of the earliest.
There's also the chance that this recording may be one of Heger's least-known (I say this only because this recording
was missing from an extensive internet discography of Heger's recordings until I was able to inform it's creator of its
existence). The sound of the recording, for the period, is good; the playing and conducting, very fine and spirited. And
one has to admit - from the historical standpoint alone - there can't have been many (if any) other complete recordings
of this work around when this one was issued in 1931.



Brahms, who thought highly of the work, told Goldmark: "That is the best thing you have done; clear-cut and
faultless, it sprang into being a finished thing, like Minerva from the head of Jupiter."



LP transfer from material issued c.1975 (EMI / Seraphim); restoration from 78rpm material issued 1931 (RCA).
