La serie, occasionalmente con accenti ironici, è
incentrata sulle avventure intorno all'anno 3000 del Comandante McLane (Dietmar Schönherr) che è a capo del veloce
incrociatore Orion nel corso di un conflitto con gli extraterrestri e che spesso arriva ai ferri corti con il governo
della Terra.

Gli effetti speciali della serie, spettacolari per l'epoca, ora
possiedono un certo fascino antiquato. Il budget della serie era basso per gli standard attuali, ma i progettisti delle
scenografie si dimostrarono molto creativi nel realizzare il massimo con i loro mezzi limitati. Furono utilizzati dei
ferri da stiro elettrici come parte della console di comando, e bicchieri di plastica per le luci del soffitto.
Ciononostante i considerevoli costi della serie provocarono la sua conclusione dopo soli 7 episodi. Nel 2003 vide la
luce un film composto da varie scene della serie originale, e nel corso degli anni sono stati pubblicati 145 romanzi
basati sulla serie e sulla continuazione della storia.

Oltre alla progettazione delle scenografie, nella
lingua originale è ritenuta memorabile la terminologia della serie: invece di usare o tradurre dei termini inglesi,
la serie ha creato appositamente dei termini originali in tedesco.

 

In the series, nations no longer exist and Earth is
united. Flying saucers, such as spaceship Orion, are flown by humans, whilst the aliens fly fighter jet-like aircraft.
The titular ship of the series title, "Spaceship Orion", (German: "Raumschiff Orion") is portrayed
as being a fast space cruiser (German: Schneller Raumkreuzer), the newest starship in mankind's fleet and the fastest
spacecraft ever created by humans.

In an entertaining and ironic way the show tells the story of the American
Commander Cliff Allister McLane (Dietmar Schönherr), an Earth starship captain and his loyal crew. He is Orion's
commander in the developing war against an alien race called the Frogs. He is notoriously defiant towards his
superiors.
