Drummer Lou Grassi assembled a particularly impressive sextet to
perform his three-part but continuous 57-minute avant-garde piece "PoGressions": cornetist Herb Robertson,
clarinetist Perry Robinson, trombonist Steve Swell, pianist Burton Greene and bassist Wilber Morris. The music is often
quite free yet Grassi gives the impression of keeping the proceedings under control. Dynamics and the use of space are
not neglected although none of the musicians could be accused of relying on pet licks or being emotionally introverted.
While there are some individual heroics during the colorful performance, it is the unpredictable yet strangely logical
