Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912)
was a very rare artist in the 19th and early 20th centuries, an Anglo-African classical composer and performer. Happily,
he achieved recognition in his lifetime from audiences, in particular for his oratorio based on Longfellow's
"Hiawatha", and from fellow composers such as Sir Edward Elgar. However, because he overworked and stretched
himself pretty thin, he died much too young, in his 37th year. (Things might well have been different had he not sold
the copyrights outright on his "Hiawatha" oratorio, which turned out to be a huge money-maker in his lifetime,
though sadly not for him.)

This KOCH International Classics CD is a very nice compilation of several works
for smaller scale musical forces. The "Petite Suite de Concert" and "Spirituals" are for solo piano.
There is more than a whiff of the salon about the atmosphere of the "Petite Suite de Concert", in its overall
charm and mood. The "Spirituals" aren't simple transcriptions of the tunes in
question, but are more "riffs" on them, to use a slightly anachronistic term. Virginia Eskin does a nice job
in each, although the piano has a slight "pingy" sound about it, almost fortepiano-ish, if that makes
sense.

The young violinist Michael Ludwig joins Eskin for the "Ballade" in d, dating from when the
composer was just about 20 (in 1895). It's a single movement, rather rhapsodic work, not really adhering to sonata form
that I can tell, but an appealing work, to be sure. Ludwig does a good job here along with Eskin.

Coleridge-Taylor's Clarinet Quintet in A is by far the longest work on the CD, 35:39 long, in its first recording.
Virginia Eskin's note quotes the past New York Times critic Harold C. Schonberg in describing the Clarinet Quintet as
"an assured piece of writing in the post-Romantic tradition", which is a pretty decent summary. The work is a
bit long in places, and it's certainly not a "chamber clarinet concerto", as the clarinet is certainly a
partner of the string quartet and not a dominant voice. It is an appealing work overall, and would be of interest to
those who want to explore the works in this instrumentation beyond Brahms and Mozart. Harold Wright, the past principal
clarinet of the Boston Symphony, and the Hawthorne String Quartet, which consists also of all Boston Symphony string
players, do a fine job in this quintet.

There is one unfortunate goof in Virginia Eskin's liner notes, namely
a misprint giving Coleridge-Taylor's year of birth as 1885 rather than 1875. The notes are also rather odd in having
almost no comment about the works themselves, except the one approving quote by Schonberg about the Clarinet Quintet.
Eskin's notes are a general bio of the composer, and that's pretty much it. So you're left on your own to react to the
music without any particular commentary from the booklet notes.
