  Touch Me was produced in 1971, one year before the Golden Age of Porn officially took off with
the screening of Deep Throat. At that time there was confusion in legal circles as to what could be banned under the
First Amendment of the United States Constitution. The guiding decisions were the Roth standard, articulated in Roth v.
United States, 354 US 476 (1957) and Memoirs v. Massachusetts, 383 US 413(1966). In Roth, the Court had struggled to
define what constituted constitutionally unprotected material. Under the Comstock laws that prevailed before Roth,
articulated most famously in the 1868 English case Regina v. Hicklin, any material that tended to "deprave and corrupt
those whose minds are open to such immoral influences" was deemed "obscene" and could be banned on that basis. Thus,
works by Balzac, Flaubert, James Joyce, and D. H. Lawrence were banned based on isolated passages and the effect they
might have on children. Roth repudiated the Hicklin test and defined obscenity more strictly, as material whose
"dominant theme taken as a whole appeals to the prurient interest" to the "average person, applying contemporary
community standards." Only material now meeting this test could be banned as "obscene."
  
  In Memoirs v.
Massachusetts, 383 U.S. 413 (1966), a plurality of the Court further redefined the Roth test by holding unprotected only
that which is "patently offensive" and "utterly without redeeming social value," but no opinion in that case could
command a majority of the Court either, and the state of the law in the obscenity field remained confused.
  

 As can be seen from my previous uploads from this period, attempts to legally display pornography sought to take
advantage of the ambiguity in Memoirs to argue that various adult films, as long as they had some kind of socially
redeeming value, could be legally exhibited. There, of course, were various interpretations of exactly what that meant.
Soon after 1967, when Memoirs was first decided, the producers were more conservative in their approach; displaying
various forms soft core with moralizing put into the plots to justify what otherwise might be banned. By 1970 and 1971,
adult film producers began experimenting even further by justifying harder material by introducing more complex
redeeming factors. This was known as the sexploitation era. Touch Me, was one of the more sophisticated attempts at hard
core experimentation. Here, the social redeeming value was the use of psychologist's group therapy session to justify
displaying what would otherwise be considered hard core pornography by having the psychologist psychoanalyze what was
occurring between the performers. Thus, we see, the full range of hard core material; oral sex, both fellatio and
cunnilingus, hetero and lesbian, sometimes in sixty nine positions, sex in missionary and cowgirl positions, with
closeups of penetration and money shots building up to a crescendo until the final scene which finishes as a full blown
orgy.
  Rene Bond, one of the more prolific and popular adult performers of the time, initially appears in Touch
Me, as one of the more conservative and reserved of the performers, expressing shock and alarm at some of the theories
the professor is espousing. She is dressed conservatively, the last of the group to remove clothing. She first is gently
coaxed into a mild lesbian scene, but eventually warms up to the rest of the performers and becomes more of the Rene we
are used to when she participates in the group orgy.
