The variety of sounds and themes from Brazil's Northeast corridor were spotlighted on this 21-cut volume, one of the four issued in 1992 by Verve's Phonogram division. They covered songwriters, vocalists, instrumentalists and material ranging from the late '60s to the mid-'80s. There are forro and accordion cuts, ballads, protest music, light romantic fare and driving, aggressive sounds. Some names, such as Elis Regina, Gilberto Gil and Milton Nascimento, are world music superstars today. Others, such as Gal Costa, Beth Carvalho and Luis Gonzaga, Jr., do not have the reputations that their performances show they deserve. Gerald Seligman once again provides excellent notes. Northern Brasil offers some of the widest array of music styles on the planet, and this disc only scratches the surface of what's available in the region. While the forro style dominates here, you also get some samba, baladas, and other subgenres I won't begin to try to label.
